Shirley charlotte bronte review6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() The choice of subject in that work is a mistake – it was too little consonant with the character – tastes and ideas of the gentle, retiring, inexperienced writer. ‘Wildfell Hall’ it hardly appears to me desirable to preserve. ![]() She disagreed with the topic (spousal abuse, substance abuse, child abuse), and thought that it was incongruent with Anne’s personality. ![]() Then I found out why Anne was so underrated, and under-read: although The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was an instant success, Charlotte blocked it from being reprinted after Anne’s death. But I’m afraid that my answer to your very logical question is not going to be all that logical. Now, you may be a normal person who’s wondering: why in the world would I hold a grudge against a woman who had been dead a good 135 years before I was even born? Well, if you’re going to be reasonable about it. ![]() Actually, no, that’s not it: at one point I wasn’t just ambivalent. But I’ve always been ambivalent towards Charlotte. Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall are some of my favorite books of all time, and I’ve spent considerable time and money on learning all I could about this fascinating family.īut what do I mean when I say that I love the Brontës? Well, it means that I adore Anne and Emily. Hell, anyone who scrolls down my Book Riot profile for two minutes flat knows how much I love the Brontës. Anyone who’s spent all of 10 minutes in conversation with me knows how much I love the Brontës. ![]()

Garlic and the Vampire by Bree Paulsen6/26/2023 ![]() I love this little world of humanoid fruits and veggies. The art is lovely, the characters are so charming, and the story is wholesome. Still, with the encouragement of Carrot and Witch Agnes, she steps up and makes her way to the vampire’s castle. Garlic is nervous and unsure of her own abilities, so when she’s volunteered by another vegetable to see if the new neighbor, a vampire, is dangerous, she’s not feeling very confident that she’s the one for the job. They each have their own little produce-sized houses and personalities. Garlic is one of a small collection of produce brought to life by a witch who needed a hand tending to her garden. ![]() And with everyone counting on her, Garlic reluctantly agrees to face the mysterious vampire, hoping she has what it takes.Īfter all, garlic drives away vampires… right?įrom her anxiety to her friendship with Carrot, Garlic is such a sweet and endearing character. At least with her friend Carrot by her side and the kindly Witch Agnes encouraging her, Garlic is happy to just tend her garden, where it’s nice and safe.īut when her village of vegetable folk learns that a bloodthirsty vampire has moved into the nearby castle, they all agree that, in spite of her fear and self-doubt, Garlic is the obvious choice to confront him. ![]() Garlic feels as though she’s always doing something wrong. ![]()

Best john marshall biography6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() As every law student learns in their constitutional law classes, Justice Harlan’s lengthy, at times emotional, dissent in Plessy was a one-off a sole voice crying out in the 19th century wilderness that unhesitatingly condemned a Louisiana law that mandated separate (but “equal”) railroad passenger cars for Black and white travelers as an affront to every citizen’s constitutional rights under the 14th Amendment.Īs Mr. Canellos has written the definitive biography of this bold, truly courageous man and his unique place in American history. In a new, aptly-titled book, “The Great Dissenter – The Story of John Marshall Harlan, America’s Judicial Hero” (Simon & Schuster, 609 pages, $32.50), author Peter S. Ferguson, by one Supreme Court justice – John Marshall Harlan – and not a single other justice at that time agreed with him. But those inspiring words were written in an 1896 case, Plessy v. Supreme Court decision, no one would think it noteworthy. In respect of civil rights, all citizens are equal before the law.” “Our Constitution is color-blind and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens. ![]()
