And i saw it on mulberry street6/24/2023 The truth is, Mulberry Street is a place that Marco probably sees everyday. "But a plain horse and wagon on Mulberry Street." (121-122) "Nothing," I said, growing red as a beet, And when his dad asks what he's seen, he responds with just that mundane detail: It's the route that Marco takes to get home, and he admits that all that he sees as he walks home (initially) is a wagon and a horse. In the book, Mulberry Street is a pretty normal suburban street. He probably even rode on the trolley past the street when he was going to school-and who knows what he dreamed up going to and from school as a kid. Mulberry Street also has special significance because when Seuss himself was growing up in Springfield, Massachusetts, he lived quite close to a Mulberry Street. After all, the title is And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, and Marco exclaims with delight at the end:įOR I HAD A STORY THAT NO ONE COULD BEAT!ĪND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET! (110-111) The setting for this story is quite obvious-it all happens on Mulberry Street, of course.

The tao of pooh book review6/24/2023 If the author acted more like Pooh, his book would not be so objectionable to my children. The author's point seems to be "Be Like Pooh." The problem is, he cannot do it himself. If "The Way" means basically "To Criticize" then this is it. This may very well be an introduction to Tao, I don't know. I saw this book as a way to introduce some big philosophical concepts. I had used his interest in Pooh to help him learn other things, like math and drawing. My four year old had chosen to read The Book of Pooh four times in a row. I read this book at night to my 4 and 6 year olds. The author used the cute characters to mask his contempt for many of the things I value in my life, and you perhaps value in yours. The contempt the author repeatedly expressed for both science and education made this book inappropriate for my young boys, ages 4 and 6.

My garden henkes6/24/2023 Sneak, sneak, sneak, brave young cat."" Dronzek's acrylic renderings swiftly evoke how snow both sharpens and softens the world. Extending himself to a younger audience than in his previous works, Henkes keeps his prose succinct and unadorned, seasoning it with repetition and an easy cadence: ""The cat wants to play. The snow turns blue,"" and everyone heads for his or her respective home, with promises of more snow-play tomorrow. But all snowy days must come to an end: ""The sky turns dark. ""OH!"" writes Henkes after accounting for all the landscape's gleeful inhabitants, and Dronzek heightens the moment by switching from neatly framed compositions to a full-bleed, double-page spread of all the characters at play. Two children, hoods up and backs to the viewer, jump into snowdrifts and dashing red cardinals swoop in and out of the snowflakes. When morning arrives and ""everything is white,"" the squirrel wants to ""skitter, skitter, skitter,"" the rabbit wants to frolic (the illustration shows it has chased the squirrel from the previous page up a tree). In this tender treatment by Henkes (Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse) and Dronzek, Henkes's wife, a painter making her children's book debut, ""Oh!"" becomes a universal expression of friskiness elicited by the first blanket of snow.

The hellbound heart book review6/24/2023 Just one year after the novella was published Clive Barker wrote and directed, ‘Hellraiser’ based on his book, I was fortunate enough to come across the audiobook for the Hellbound Heart, and was surprised to find there were a few differences to the film. One icon has stood in the background and watched (for better or worse), and that is the legendary Pinhead.įirst appearing in Clive Barker’s horror novella The Hellbound Heartfirst published in 1986, it also introduces us to one of the most recognisable horror objects in all of literature and film, a puzzle box called The Lament Configuration. Among the horror greats like Freddie, Leatherface, Chucky the Killer dolland Jason. Fan of horror will know some of Clive’s work, as most of his stories were adapted to film, from the Midnight Meat Train, to the Iconic Candy Man, he has created some memorable monsters and interesting stories. He was and still is the master of Body horror, and his stories tend to question and put forward the most interesting aspects of humanity before twisting it in new and disgusting, blood-curdling ways. Clive Barker is one of my favourite horror writers, his stories of the macabre and grotesque always leave a very satisfying, yet overwhelming feeling of disgust and intrigue as you read his stories.

The communist manifesto and das kapital6/23/2023 In 1842, Engels moved to Manchester, England, to work in the office of his father’s cotton mill, giving the young man unparalleled insight into the conditions of the working class and the effects of the capitalist system. Each of them found a community of like-minded individuals in the Young Hegelians, a group of intellectuals that reacted to and wrote about Hegel’s legacy. At a young age, both men found an affinity with the works of German philosopher Georg Hegel, whose theory that societal progress is the result of conflicting elements had a strong influence over their political writings. They had markedly different upbringings: Marx’s father supported his academic pursuits (albeit insisting his son studied law rather than philosophy), while Engels was pushed into joining his father’s business. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were both born in Prussia, now Germany.

Serial Killers by Peter Vronsky6/23/2023 In an interview with host Nahlah Ayed, the historian explains how the media and pop culture have shaped our fascination with serial killers. Anywhere men gathered barber shops, mechanics, waiting rooms you would see these magazines." And of course they're all celebrating this mutilation, torture and rape of female victims. "This was not under the counter material. They were called 'the sweats' because they use this type of paint that simulated the victims sweating in agony and the torture, as well," Vronksy explains in a 2019 lecture he delivered at Ryerson University in Toronto, called Serial Homicide: A Global Perspective. One genre was the so-called 'sweats' - men's adventure magazines. "There were all these genres of over-the-counter magazines, conventional magazines. And in trying to understand them, we've inevitably created a culture that sometimes even appears to celebrate them. Thanks to the mystery surrounding serial killers, much of what we know about them is based on press reports about their crimes with very little academic study - they have become somewhat mythologized in larger popular culture.įrom Jack the Ripper to the Golden State Killer, there is no shortage of media that looks into the history, psychology and crimes of these serial killers. It may appear they are a recent phenomenon but they go back centuries, at least the 1400s, according to Canadian historian Peter Vronsky. Serial killers are everywhere in today's pop culture - movies, books, documentaries and podcasts.
